Go Vermont! – Vermont Agency of Transportation

Building a statewide trip planner that combines demand-responsive and fixed route transit options

Despite its low population density and largely rural land area, Vermont’s transit system covers the entire state. Much of the service provided is demand-responsive transit that is available to the general public. Unfortunately, online trip planners have traditionally only been able to show fixed route transit options, presenting a major barrier for transit riders to get where they need to go.

In order to remove this barrier, the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) partnered with Trillium and Cambridge Systematics from 2016-2018 as part of the FTA’s Mobility-on-Demand Sandbox Program. We worked together to deploy a statewide multimodal trip planner that consumes GTFS-flex data, an extension of GTFS that connects demand-responsive transportation to fixed route transit. This has enabled Vermonters to plan transit trips in one place instead of struggling to find information about the services of various transit providers and how they connect to one another.

Trillium customizes solutions based on the goals of our clients and the contexts in which they operate. We understand that making transit easier to use takes innovation and adaptation, especially as the world of transportation continues to evolve.
